Sensitively translated into English for the first time by Damion Searls, 28 Paradises captures the exquisite sadness of waking from a beautiful dream. There are twenty-eight dreams in this book, or perhaps one dream in twenty-eight parts—visions of paradise imagined by Zehrfuss during a time of deep sadness. Captured first in Zehrfuss’s brightly colored gouaches, each paradise was then refashioned as a poem by Modiano.

Zehrfuss’s paintings are Edens in miniature, and rather than describe them outright, Modiano dreams himself into these reveries in quiet, understated verse. The reader enters this shared realm in an experience less like paging through a book and more like slipping into a shared world. These paradises are wishes for moments when a painting, or a poem, or a lover—perhaps they are not so different—relieves the loneliness of being human. As Modiano writes with a touch of wistfulness, “The Lilliputian painted her paradises / And I / Next to her / Wrote a poem.” A pure example of ekphrastic writing—poetry inspired by paintings—this book shows how writing and visual art can together create a unique emotional experience.

First published by Editions de l’Olivier/ Le Seuil in 2005

Review(s):
“A tiny, highbrow volume for the beach, or reveries of it: poems in the nostalgic, laconic manner of novelist Modiano, 2014 Nobel laureate, and crisp, lovely, pastel hued miniatures by his wife Zehrfuss, jewellery designer and illustrator.”
“28 Paradises is the marriage of prose and painting… it is a rare book that reveals not only the individual talents of the authors but also the depth of the couple’s creative union.”
With 28 Paradies “the ekphrasis series takes an exciting step away from the realm of the academic and historical towards a more humble space occupied by poetry and art… it’s an unassuming and thrilling work, a little treasure to be shelved among giants.”

ISBN: 9781644230022

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0600/7029/7806/products/O_a76499f3-0f1f-4fe4-b82d-417aceeec9c9.jpg?v=1637683993
9781626868625
52 Sunsets : A Year of Calm Coloring
52 Sunsets
Author(s):

As beautiful as the year is long!

These lovely illustrations are waiting for your imagination to fill in all the spectacular colors of twilight. Reading it today highlights the change in perspectives on sexuality and nudity in art in the past thirty years.

Written over several years in his notebooks, Davenport’s distinct reflections on Balthus’s paintings try to explain why his work is so radical, and why it has so often come under scrutiny for its depiction of girls and women. Davenport throws the lens back on the viewer and asks: is it us or Balthus who reads sexuality into these paintings? For Davenport, the answer is clear: Balthus may indeed show us periods in adolescent development that are uncomfortable to view, but the eroticization exists primarily on the part of the viewer.

Arguing that Balthus’s figures are erotic only if we make them so, and that their innocence is more present than anything pornographic in them, Davenport posits that the paintings hold up a mirror to our own perversities and force us, difficultly, to confront them. He writes, “The nearer an artist works to the erotic politics of his own culture, the more he gets its concerned attention. Gauguin’s naked Polynesian girls, brown and remote, escape the scandal of Balthus’s, although a Martian observer would not see the distinction.” Davenport’s critique helps us understand Balthus in our times—something we need more than ever as we crucially confront sexual politics in visual art.

Review(s):
"What [Davenport] does with knowledge and information is what any great artist does with his or her medium: communicate a feeling first and then a whole world of thoughts, a nexus of possible realities embedded in our own... With much of the narrative played out in Paris, during the French Revolution Dickens examines the interplay between personal action, and the flow of history. Dr Manette, having travelled to Paris finds himself imprisoned in the Bastille for 18 brutal years, unable to see his kind and loving daughter Lucy. On his eventual return to London the two of them become witnesses in a treason case against Charles Darney who is accused of giving secrets to the French. Lucy finds a way of exonerating him, Darney falls in love with her and by some strange twist of fate he finally reveals the terrible secret that his own uncle was responsible for Manette's years in the Bastille. This memoir is a tribute to them, but evolves into a narrative of how their son made his mark on the international stage of graphic design. For Rajie, art is an organic expression of what moves him, his art activism is his gift to the world. Sight, what we see and what we think we see, is a major theme in this narrative. On one level, Rajie gives sight back to his father who was blinded in the early 1930’s by the ravages of cataract. Najeeb could not share in the excitement of Rajie’s starting a graphic design firm that was acclaimed for its excellence. Najeeb could not see the symbols Rajie and his partner created which the world relies upon to navigate transportation symbols and public places. He died before “seeing” his talented son shake the hand of an American president. Perhaps Najeeb’s greatest legacy was his love for Palestine. Rajie has shared his father’s love for the Palestinian people, and began to travel to the Middle East. Now, using his art as his voice, his camera as a partner, Rajie has lifted the veil of what people see or think they see with regard to the Palestinian people. Some of his photographs are disturbing, his experiences equally unsettling because Rajie narrates the truth as he sees it. The pain of the Palestinian people cries out through Rajie’s art and activism—the horror of the Occupation, the brutality of life that Palestinian children experience every day. Rajie wants the world to see what he has seen, and, like his father before him, yearns for peace to come to this troubled and tortured region. The image of Najeeb sitting by his radio is replaced by the image of Roger working in his studio, both men wishing for a peace that seems forever elusive. His assemblages, posters, and artwork have been featured in art shows throughout the United States and internationally. Provocative yet truthful, Rajie’s vision is recorded in his art. In his own words, “My art will be my voice long after I have gone. It will never be silenced.”

Review(s):
"A powerful and poignant expression of the Palestinian narrative of exile weaving together the aesthetic and the personal story of longing for home. Rajie Cook's personal account is an intimate revelation of the special bond between father and son in the context of the Palestinian national identity and experience. This revelation emanates from an emotional identification with an attachment to the father as a visual and artistic celebration of creative expression. The narrative is therefore multifaceted; yet it unravels in the context of an exile in the West that is essentially discriminatory and dismissive of the humanity of the Palestinian people individually and collectively."
"Rajie has been able to combine his talent in design, his sensitivity, and his penchant for civic engagement in a series of powerful images that confront us with painful, contemporary realities. Through doing so, he once again demonstrates that the artist cannot separate himself from history and the human condition. If this is the message of art, then Rajie is its sublime interpreter."

ISBN: 9781566560320

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0600/7029/7806/products/O_af285386-903d-457d-be55-ea4e48c0854a.jpg?v=1637686135
9780892817658
A Yoga of Indian Classical Dance : The Yogini's Mirror
A Yoga of Indian Classical Dance
Author(s): Roxanne Kamayani Gupta

The yoga and classical dance traditions of India have been inextricably entwined for millennia. As a twenty-year-old student from America she was miraculously and mysteriously absorbed into Indian culture, became a Hindu, and began an odyssey so unusual and unique that the reader will be enchanted by its telling. Choosing the path of the dancer, Roxanne Gupta accomplished what no Western woman had done before: being accepted and trained by Indian masters and then performing in the Indian classical traditions--from the palaces of maharajas to the arts festivals of Europe and America--while at the same time achieving a doctorate in the anthropology of religion and being initiated into a number of yogic traditions. The bright, swirling, colored-paper collage images focus on earth’s creatures, in the sea, on land, and in the sky, as well as on the connections between them. The images come to a climax in a gorgeous, double-page spread of two young girls, one black, one white, celebrating who they are and what they see in the world: children, flowers, mountains, trees, stars, the moon, and the sun. Using the musical score printed on the last page, grown-ups can sing along as they share the book with young kids, who will want to point to the small details in every scene even as they absorb the sweeping sense of the interconnected world. From deep-sea views of a whale and fish to soaring scenes of a purple mountaintop, the rainbow theme is constant and extends to pictures of an arch that fills the sky and beams that glow from the open pages of a book. On other spreads, children of all races celebrate sunset and morning, the winter wind and summer sun, and lush gardens, with the words that God almighty made them all. A beautiful celebration of the elemental creation story. — Hazel Rochman, BOOKLIST, March 1, 2010, STAR

Bryan elevates a beloved hymn to new heights in this joyful treatment of Alexander’s classic song. This hymn has been interpreted by artists such as Anna Vojtech (NorthSouth, 2006), Bruce Whatley (HarperCollins, 2001), and others, but Bryan’s multicultural celebration of God and creation bursts with originality and contemporary appeal. Cut-paper collages in cheerful hues depict scenes of people, animals, and nature. Each illustration holds its own, as there are no weak links here. Opening with a sunburst Ferris wheel full of adults and children of many nations and ending with the multicolored hands of the Creator reaching down from the sky, the artist has created a masterpiece in which art and text work together. Bryan includes images of his mother’s scissors (which he now uses) on the endpapers, along with an illustrator’s note and musical notation. Johnson renders the ordinary extraordinary with timeless imagery, inviting us to reexamine and rediscover our schools anew, and to find beauty and joy in the most unexpected places.

Review(s):
(STARRED REVIEW) The multiple-award-winning illustrator takes a page from his own book—Alphabet City (1995), that is—and creates a graphic-alphabet book that will have students searching their own schools for letters. In an introductory note, Johnson says his inspiration was a partially eaten peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwich his daughter brought home from school: it formed a perfect letter G (and is the basis for the page featuring that letter). No matter the inspiration, though, the artwork within will surely have readers looking at the world from all different angles and perspectives and appreciating the beauty in the mundane. A shadow on the fender of a yellow school bus forms a B; an ordinary double-paned window is an E when viewed from the side; the handle on a pencil sharpener is an L; two metal bookends next to one another form an M; an upturned toilet seat is a perfect U. Not all of these can be found in every school—Q is the center circle on a basketball court with a painted comet logo bursting through—but there are enough ideas here that kids will leave no stone unturned in looking for their own versions. Johnson's art consists of monoprints on paper with digital enhancements, and it has an old-fashioned photo feel, complete with grainy texture and whitish borders around every picture. Not only does Johnson once again take something simple and make it extraordinary, but he will inspire readers to do the same.
Johnson follows A Is for Art and his Caldecott Honor–winning Alphabet City with a series of letters found in a traditional brick school. Instead of the meticulous photorealistic images of Alphabet City, Johnson offers monoprints—grainy, meditative, and subtly colored, like sun-bleached photographs. There’s a sense of calm as the page turns and the next letter reveals itself. Every one, no matter how complex, appears quite naturally, without any contrivance, in settings most readers will recognize. Some letters are found in architectural details, as when the edges of a window frame are captured from an angle that makes them appear to be an E. The L is a pencil sharpener handle, the F is a flagpole with two flags on it, and the R is a twisted rope in a gym, its proportions classically correct. The images are oddly free of people—it’s like a school after hours or over summer vacation, when no one is there and one is free to explore. The lack of artificiality conveys the feeling that forms like these are all around us, waiting to be noticed.
Though alphabet books have proliferated in the years since Johnson published his Caldecott Honor book Alphabet City (Viking, 1999), his concept, which is about looking, not about language, remains distinctive. Twenty years after Johnson’s initial foray into the genre, there are still very few alphabet books that are about visual discovery. Each page takes readers to a schoolhouse and asks them to identify the alphabetic shape within the tableaux. A ladder in the library forms an “A,” while angled stairwell banisters become a “K.” The simple concept showcases the complicated process by which the artist creates his images. Johnson’s photorealistic monoprints are essentially a printed painting, digitally enhanced. To children, the illustrations may appear to be photographs. Of course, that is to lose sight of the shared experience—Johnson’s first seeing (and then painstakingly re-creating), and our looking. The school house context will create immediate opportunity for text extensions; used alongside similar titles with content area focus, Leslie McGuirk’s If Rocks Could Sing (Tricycle Press, 2011) and Krystina Castella’s Discovering Nature’s Alphabet (Heydey, 2006), this title will inspire young students to learn to look wherever they go. VERDICT A highly recommended title.–Lisa Lehmuller, East Providence School District, RI
It’sbeen twenty years since Johnson’s Alphabet City (BCCB 11/95), and nowhe’s returned with a new illustrative take on serendipitous alphabeticalappearances, this time looking at places audiences might find A through Z intheir own schools. Rather than the photorealistic art of the previous volume,this time the illustrations are grainy monoprints with some digitalenhancement; the letters still require some discernment to find and isolate (Lis the handle of a wall-mounted pencil sharpener, for instance), so thevignettes remain authentic in requiring tenacity and imagination while stayingtrue to likely school surroundings. The varying levels of difficulty enhancethe audience breadth; the conceptual pullback necessary to find F in a pair offluttering flags on a pole, for instance, is a step that could lead todiscussions of both art and science. While the visuals are intriguing, the realvalue here lies in encouragement to look closely and in new ways at a settingfamiliar to the point of invisibility; make sure you leave plenty of time for aletter-hunt around your own building.
Harking back to his first book (the Caldecott Honor–winning Alphabet City, rev. 11/95), Johnson shows the shapes of letters in everyday scenes, this time within a school, concentrating solely on letterforms rather than on words that begin with those letters. The illustrations (described on the copyright page as “monoprints on paper with digital enhancement”) have a grainy texture that gives them a softer, more handmade appearance than those in Johnson’s previous books. Each highly detailed image shows the letter standing out clearly but naturally, a balance of discovery and ease. The viewer is meant to solve a double puzzle on each page: what part of the school is the picture showing, and where is the letter? So, a stepladder forms the letter A, and is found in the library; a twisty slide forms the letter S, on the playground. Any child who knows his or her alphabet will be able to easily identify each letter, but a few of the locations are harder to decipher (and there is no answer key appended). The letter X is the weak link in this offering, possibly showing two dandelion stalks crossing each other on a playing field. This worthy companion to Alphabet City is likely to inspire a few students to discover and document their own local alphabets.

ISBN: 9781416925217

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0600/7029/7806/products/O_24af1e51-ca95-4a8f-b0d2-7de5082f7bf2.jpg?v=1645647356
9781839646546
Alphonse Mucha Mini Wall calendar 2022 (Art Calendar)
Alphonse Mucha Mini Wall calendar 2022 (Art Calendar)
Author(s):

No artist captured the glamour of the fin-de-siècle era as definitively as Alphonse Mucha. From the moment he encounters her on the St. Petersburg stage, Ivan falls completely for Pauline. Though Pauline returns his feelings, she is bound by her singular passion for her art and her devotion to her gentle, older husband, Louis. Nevertheless, Ivan pursues Pauline across countries and continents—from Russia to France to Germany to Prussia—and in the decades that follow their fateful meeting, the lives of Pauline, Ivan, and Louis remain permanently intertwined as the lovers face jealousy, separation, the French Revolution of 1848, the cholera epidemic of 1849, the Franco-Prussian War, Turgenev’s arrest in Russia, Louis’s heartbreak and resignation, and the highs and lows of their artistic careers. “You know those unofficial marriages,” Turgenev would write almost thirty years after meeting Pauline, “They sometimes turn out more poisonous than the accepted form.”

With beautiful and compelling prose and employing multiple perspectives, Joie Davidow (who herself has a background in opera) illuminates not only the interior lives of these two intensely passionate artists, but also the grand historic moments that Pauline and Ivan experienced and the celebrated figures who moved in their circles—including George Sand, Leo Tolstoy, Frédéric Chopin, Franz Liszt, and Ary Scheffer—providing insight into the dynamic worlds of 19th century opera, literature, art, and politics.
